It tends to be considered both a treat and a pleasure when a truly great Moorcroft design is released on a blue background, not only because of its rarity but also because it radiates a mellow hue, synonymous with both water and sky. In a harbour scene, a variety of sailing barges, some of them ‘stumpy-rigged’, glide past a busy town, gently passing one another in the breeze. Paul Hilditch has an ability to intrigue and invite, a skill which is at its very height on this beautifully-shaped vase, with its dark, enticing corners and mysterious pathways leading into the depths of an old-fashioned, riverside community. Sometimes a truly great vase emerges from Moorcroft. This is one of them.
