A blue poppy is a sight to behold. Native to the shaded mountain areas in the western Himalayas, northern Burma, Tibet and Yunnan Province in China, its appeal lies in the large, deep sky-blue flowers. In one sense, it resembles a European poppy, but far removed in colour. Compared with a red poppy, it is about as similar as a soldier’s uniform is to that of a nurse, and it is this unique fact which qualified A Ray of Hope for a place in The Collection of Remembrance. Its presence, not unlike Papaver, also pays homage to the bravery of our nurses throughout World War I. Fundamental characteristics make it the perfect flower to feature on a design in this collection in that it offers through the medium of a peaceful, yet melancholy colour way which turns, almost imperceptibly, into a small ray of hope that life has not yet gone.
With masterful attention to detail and precision, Paul has managed to recall the fine characteristics which make this particular flower so appealing. From delicate, almost crepe paper petals to the thick coarse stems, each segment of its form has been translated into beautiful art pottery, either with the use of tubelining, brilliant colour application or sgraffito etching upon the surface. The burgundy wash of colour will stir a thousand thoughts of life and the will to survive.
Paul brings us poppies which have never looked so crisp, clean and clear on art pottery. From the inky-blue petals to the fine wisps of leaves and burgundy washes of colour, A Ray of Hope is a stunning, tangible memorial to keep in your home and reflect upon every day.
