ACES HIGH
Designer: Paul Hilditch
Shape: 30/10 (Height 10”/25cm)
Numbered Edition
Breath-taking and exciting is the vision of fields and meadows all cleverly patch-worked together and blanketed upon this remarkable vase. Once again, Paul takes us to a new perspective to place the viewer high up above vintage aircraft and choppy scatterings of clouds to look down upon the world below. Aces High, brought forward for 2015, is a subtle tribute to the military pilots and their magnificent aircraft as we enter the second year of centennial commemoration of the First World War. Placed strategically within the design are three different planes, accurately cast under the observational, eagle-eye of this ever-successful Moorcroft designer.
Breathtakingly featured is a ‘Sopwith Triplane’ which first flew on 28th May 1916 and was eventually sent to France in December that same year. Alongside it is a ‘Bristol F2B Fighter’ which entered service in March 1917. Pilots soon learnt that this was a plane which could be thrown around the sky. To complete this aerial picture, is a ‘Sopwith Camel F1’, a single-seat biplane fighter introduced on the Western Front in June 1917 with No. 4 Squadron of the Royal Naval Air Service, near Dunkirk. Eventually, no less than 13 squadrons were fully equipped with the Sopwith Camel. In practice, none of these three planes would have ever flown alongside each other. Instead, Paul’s design sets out the unique perspective that these pilot aces would have experienced high in the sky, looking down on homely ‘blighty’ or foreign fields.
The skill and attention to detail that Paul weaves into his designs to achieve such exhilarating and fascinating imagery, is already legendary. Every part of this masterpiece reveals spectacular revelations in design, tubelining and painting.
