Almost thirty years ago, Sally Tuffin introduced penguins into Moorcroft art with a limited edition vase (350) and three limited edition plates (150 each). Popular from the outset, penguins have made several successful appearances over three subsequent decades. The latest, from designer, Nicola Slaney, is entitled Family on Ice and as such, it forms an integral part of the new 2014 Autumn Collection.
As a subject matter for a designer, penguins are both hard and yet easy at one and the same time. After all, the birds stand and walk in their own amusing way; they lay and hatch their eggs as every other bird of their kind have done for tens of thousands of years, and their habitat of icebergs, snow and white mountains have always been the same. A penguin is a penguin at the end of the day. It comes with black and white feathers with a flash of orange under the neck. You do not have red penguins or blue penguins, but only black and white penguins, just as nature made them. Even their egg and chick are the same light grey.
So what is it that makes this awkward and often faintly comical bird so popular the world over? For a start, they live and raise their families on some of the most hostile terrains on earth. Human beings instinctively relate to that in the same way that they can relate to the protective love and attention parents have, first for the egg and then for the chick. Their loneliness in a cold sea of white ice and snow will strike a chord with many people and yet their ability to thrive as a community appeals to us all. Perhaps almost uniquely, their posture and their antics can really make us smile.
Family on Ice says it all. Drawn on the timeless 158/6 vase (height 6”/15cm), Nicola Slaney invites us to share in both the chill of the family’s Antarctic home and the warmth of parent birds and their chick. One of these days, penguins will re-emerge once more with another label attached, but for 2014, Family on Ice will be a design of pure charm in a Moorcroft collection as well as an essential addition. Everyone loves penguins which is why anything carrying their image readily finds a place in a caring home. Family on Ice is no exception.
