When more than three million British men marched off to war from 1914 onwards, the decimated population left behind ground to a temporary halt. But the undiscovered workforce left behind was an untapped energy source. The women of Britain and the agricultural strength of working animals, stepped up to the challenge. The Women's Land Army or ‘Land Girls’ was first organised by the Board of Agriculture to start in 1915. By 1917 there were approximately 250,000 women labouring on farms doing all the jobs that were required to enable a farm to function normally - threshing, ploughing, harvesting, even land reclamation and drainage.
With all manufacturing efforts directed towards artillery and munitions, and the introduction of a petrol allowance, farm life still clung onto a relatively peaceful existence, without heavy machinery. Instead, with the help of gentle giants in the form of shire horses- the beloved animals which take centre stage in this moving design by Anji Davenport in a limited edition of 100. It is easy to overlook the efforts and contribution of millions of animals brought back to work during the war, both on the battlefield and on the home front. As a devout salute to all of these creatures, Harvest Giants, in the warming mellow tones of autumn corn, was created. The Land Girls lift the sheaves of corn with pitchforks onto a wagon pulled by a pair of obedient horses. An evening sun is setting beyond a dry stone wall and the many more fields left to work. There is no rest for our land girls and the shire horses which help them reap the Victory Harvest.
