Early in 2014, Emma Bossons FRSA, expressed her love of Japanese art via an informal interview. Greatly influenced by the dulcet tones of ancient wood-block prints and the unique style in which animals, people and flowers all harmonise together, her adoration of this Japanese art form can often be seen percolating into her own designs today.
Curiously, Japanese woodblock carving lends itself to the creative methods used at Moorcroft. It is a specialist art style in which there is little room for ambiguity. The Japanese patterns and colours are always crystal clear, and neither process is the result of a single person’s work, but several - the artist, the carver, the printer and the publisher. Both art processes need several years of apprenticeship and practical experience. The parallel is clear. Japanese prints share a vital ingredient used in some of the art pottery designed by Emma at Moorcroft today.
Isola Bella is expressive of these influences on Emma who has designed two white peacocks, proud and majestic, and has placed them among stylized pink chrysanthemums, all mounted against a soothing dove-grey backcloth. For a new perspective on her favoured peacocks, the designer researched the distant shores of the Borromean Islands, tucked into the Italian part of Lake Maggiore. One of the islands, Isola Bella, is famed for its stunning Baroque palace and Romanesque gardens spread across ten terraces ornamented with balustrades, hedges, obelisks and statues. A stroll through the gardens takes the walker past majestic trees, spectacular flowers and exotic plants. Remarkably, roaming free, are stunning white peacocks, each of them delighting in their own grandiose plumage and basking in their own unique style.
