Whilst, as a nation, we take every pride in wearing red poppies on our lapels once a year to honour the people whose lives have been changed or lost through war - remembrance can also be a very personal thing. By designing a poppy in a style that would not usually be associated with our more familiar image of commemoration, Kerry brings to the Collection of Remembrance an alternative design which stands out alone in its own very special way.
Papaver does not illustrate red petals, tricolour flags, or cornfields. Instead, its simplicity and touching serenity are captured within the maturing seed heads of blue poppies found most frequently in mountainous or desert regions of the world. Flooded in metallic oxides in varying shades of blue and grey with the slightest blushes of burgundy or pink, the delicate seed pods are a peaceful reminder of hope and a gesture of homage to those in the nursing profession who served so valiantly and constantly throughout the Great War. The Moorcroft designer has picked up the colour blue and has used it to great effect with the soft blue of the World War I nurses’ uniform. Now that the luscious petals have fallen, Kerry’s poppy is momentarily muted and held still before it sheds its seed to make way for new life.
The beauty of Papaver does not end there. The subdued and softly coloured seed pods introduce a magical way to represent the triumph of nature over the devastation and decay brought about by the evil of war. There is already hope in the air as the wounded were given hope of recovery by those who nursed them.
