It is not the first time that Moorcroft has taken up the immortal lines of Edward Lear’s poem The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea In a Beautiful pea green boat, They took some honey, and plenty of money, Wrapped up in a five-pound note and hopefully it will not be the last. The poem is positively alive with imagery (“they danced by the light of the moon” or “The Owl looked up to the stars above”) and so it goes on. Emma Bossons presents her artistic version of The Owl and the Pussycat in a totally different style to that chosen by her fellow Design Studio Member, Nicola Slaney, when she took on the subject back in 2005. A strong call from Moorcroft retailers across the world for more of the same produced the inevitable response. The result is a small plaque 4” x 8” (10cm x 20cm) and two miniature vases both on the 370/2 (height 2”/5cm), one of which depicts the Owl and the other the Pussycat. The first time this miniature shape has been used in over one hundred years. The plaque itself is all-embracing. Both the Owl and the Pussycat are there, as you would expect, but this time, everything else is there as well and they combine to create a true picture-poem, including a diminutive pea-green boat, jars of honey, cash and a five-pound note!
There is something wholly magical about the outcome in The Owl and The Pussycat – something which will appeal to children, parents and grandparents alike. The design is alive and full of movement, a fact all the more remarkable because the sky on the plaque is a night sky. Long life, love and happiness abound throughout each of the three pieces, all of which are presented as open editions.
