TREE SPARROWS
Designer: Kerry Goodwin
Shape: PLQ 3 (4” x 12”/10cm x 30cm excluding frame)
Every now and again, a great design will emerge from Moorcroft – one which, by its very nature, will cause heads to turn and collectors to open their doors and bring it into their homes. These designs do not have to cost a fortune to be wrapped in that prized cloak of greatness. Indeed, their simplicity can bring them from nowhere to play with our emotions and remain with us for ever thereafter. There can hardly be a less likely subject for greatness than a group of seven tree sparrows in scrubland at the edge of a wood or eating autumn berries in shrubs at the bottom of the garden. Their plain brown and grey-fawn plumage with tell-tale black cheek spots, can hardly be said to come from the regal world of peacocks, yet here they are, posturing happily on the simplest of Moorcroft plaques.
If we are honest with ourselves, there is a sad voice deep indie ourselves which urges us to believe that we should not be enchanted by these plain foot-soldiers of the feathered world, and therein lies a problem. If we take heed of that miserable inner voice, then greatness will pass us by and Tree Sparrows is a great design. Two sparrows gaze at each other whilst a third peers into the distance. The other four are doing what tree sparrows do best. Unlike their more raucous cousins, the house sparrows, Kerry’s tree sparrows shuffle around in the dry grass as if the whole world was looking. Seven sparrows turn a sepia-coloured tile framed in a simple combination of brown and black into a vibrant, living entity. Tree Sparrows is a design lining itself up to become a great piece of Moorcroft. The 2015 Catalogue is richer for its presence and it will deserve the accolades offered to its creator and her tree sparrows over the year ahead.
